About Us

Our Mission:

Moms in Law School is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to providing resources, mentorship, and financial assistance to mothers pursuing a juris doctor.

As a non-profit organization, everything we do is for mothers pursuing a juris doctorate. Obtaining a J.D. is an extremely expensive pursuit. The moment a person decides to go to law school, they begin to incur cost. From paying for LSAT study materials to paying for the LSAT and then paying for applications. A potential law student is already hundreds of dollars in the hole before they even take their first course. Then, once accepted, there’s tuition, books, supplies, organization fees, and so much more. Once they complete the degree they still have to pay for Bar exam preparation and the bar exam application. Most law students leave with crippling debt. All of this is in addition to child care expenses. Our goal is to help ease those expenses for moms by providing financial assistance for these costs.

Our Program Areas:

  1. Scholarships: Providing financial aid to mothers currently enrolled in a juris doctor program.

  2. Study Materials and Resources: Providing free resources or funding for LSAT and bar examination study materials.

  3. Mentorship Program: Connecting mothers with students and legal professionals that have similar experiences for guidance and career development.

  4. Workshops: We provide recurring workshops and information sessions to equip mothers with the information they need to apply to law school.

Our Success:

Since 2021, we have been able to provide support and resources to over 1200 prospective and current law students through our website, Facebook group, and Zoom sessions.

Meet the Founder

Jasmine Lashawn, 1L Elon University School of Law

My name is Jasmine Green, I am a recent graduate of Eon University School of law. When I decided to go to law school, I began attending information sessions and researching topics like, life as a law school student. I quickly noticed that diversity of age was promoted through the terms of traditional and non-traditional students. I also noticed the push to include students of all races. However, there was one minority never mentioned. That group was mothers who attend or graduated from law school. As a single mom, I knew the challenges for me would be different, especially since first-year law students can't work. At the time my daughter was 3 and I was wondering how to navigate law school as a mom while still being able to provide for my child emotionally and financially. I began researching and googling "moms in law school" and almost all my searches came up void. I only knew one lawyer who was familiar with the territory, but she had been out of law school so long, she didn’t remember much from her experience. So, I forged on anyway. I was accepted to law school in 2021 and only had about 5 moms in my class of about 180. After getting adjusted to my new life as a law student and juggling motherhood, I launched Moms in Law School.

Meet our Director

My name is Quinterra Sherman and I am a J.D. graduate of FAMU College of Law. I am a mother to one boy and he really keeps me on my toes. My desire is to be an advocate, example, and supporter of moms attending, or aspiring to attend law school. There will be days we won't get the laundry done, cases read for class, or get the children to school on time but, everything your child and school work needs is in you. I promise! This journey is far from easy but I promise you it's even further from impossible.
